A Direct Teaching Social Skills Program
Be part of an innovative direct teaching social skills program for children with learning differences. This program was developed by the Shelton School in Dallas, Texas and is used to assist children with acquiring tools to effectively interact with peers and interpret non-verbal communication cues. Some of the
goals of the program include:
■Improved ability to create and maintain healthy peer relationships
■Develop effective problem solving techniques
■Create more positive interactions at school
■Improved interpersonal communication skills
■Improved ability to effectively communicate needs
■Reduced negative behaviour interactions
■Improved self-confidence
This program incorporates drama, art and role play to help children understand the core components of the program. The core components include: communication, problem solving and friendship building.
We will also be incorporating some of the key lessons from the "Knowing Yourself, Knowing Others" workbook by Barbara Cooper and Nancy Widdows. This workbook is used in the SuperKids social skills program in Ridgefield, Connecticut.

CLASSROOM CONNECTIONS
Introducing a new Kindergarten program offered at Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre this fall. This program will be available to children that require additional support in the areas of language development, sensory integration and social skills. The programs are intended to provide opportunities for children to develop the necessary skills to be successful at school in a supportive and inclusive environment. The program elements will include: literacy, numeracy, science and the development of social skills. A direct teaching model that supports the development of skills that children require to learn effectively in classroom environments will be the primary method of instruction in the program. There will be a maximum of 8 children in the Classroom Connections 1 program.
Three program formats are available in the Classroom Connections series. The programs will run for 8 weeks and the sessions will be offered in the following formats. Families may register for more than one program.

Tuesdays 1-3pm Classroom Connections 1 Kindergarten Program for children
Thursdays 1-3pm Classroom Connections 2 Parent Participating Program
Fridays 1-3 pm CHOICES for Families –A Social Skills class for parents and their children. Siblings are welcome to attend this program. This program incorporates drama, art and role play to help children understand the core components of the program. The core components include: communication, problem solving and friendship building.
